"Mommy, is Hillary Clinton a bad lady? She yells a lot!"
[Why do I need to explain this to a 4 year old? He's not going to know the difference. I know! I'll just explain the two party system like Captain America v. Ironman. No no no...I don't want him to think that superheros fight against each other. People that are supposed to be fighting for the same thing....trashing and hating on each other? No no no. Can't go there. He's four...I should just distract him with the iPad...or play dough...or a cookie.]
"Mommy, do we like Donald Trump?"
[Oh no...don't ask me that. Don't ask me if he's a good person. Don't ask me if he's better than Hillary Clinton. Please Lord, he's not old enough to worry about these things. I shouldn't have to explain politics to the kid who thinks the word "poop" is the funniest thing on the planet.]
"Mommy, who do you want to be the President?"
[Come on, kid. Cut mom a break. Mommy is not ready for you to grow up this fast. Lord, please give me the words to say.]
"Well, buddy. Everyone believes differently. I like tomatoes...you don't like tomatoes. I believe naps help you grow big and strong...you believe naps make you miss out on fun things in life. Hillary Clinton believes differently about a lot of things in life than mommy and daddy do. And she's not yelling...she's just speaking loudly so that everyone can hear her. Donald Trump believes in some of the same things that mommy and daddy do. Only one of them can be the President of the United States and help take care of our country. We get to vote for which one we'd like to help the country. Hillary Clinton isn't a bad lady...she's just made some bad choices, buddy...just like when you don't listen to mommy and you do something your not supposed to. She didn't listen to the people of the United States and did what she wanted instead. Donald Trump isn't a bad man, but he's made some bad choices too...like you know when you say "poop" at the dinner table and get into trouble? Donald Trump doesn't always use nice words either. But just because they make mistakes doesn't mean they aren't good people. Jesus loves everyone, remember?! But...we can only vote for one of them."
"Okay mom. But if Hillary Clinton becomes President, we're going to need Captain America to come save us."
Y'all...politics might not be your thing. You might not want to pay attention. Maybe they said something you don't agree with and you've written this election off all together. Maybe you're voting for the "lesser of two evils." Maybe you're voting third party. Whatever you decide...y'all our kids are watching. They're listening. They're wondering. They are the next generation. Its up to us to teach them how to vote....how to make decisions that will bring glory to God....how to treat others (especially in this digital age)....how to decipher what's right and what's wrong and how we should handle it. So yes, my son is four. But his inquisitive little mind is going full speed. So why not teach him now? And hey...if a four year old cares this much about the election...shouldn't you?
